YO service wraps up spring session

At the end of each 11-week Youth Outdoors session, youth participants lead projects and educational activities focused on natural resources and community service. This spring’s 10 crews, based at rec centers in Saint Paul, Minneapolis and Ramsey County, led a variety of interesting projects on May 31 to wrap up their service term: repairing and installing wood duck houses, creating a children’s play space at a community garden, building a compost bin, gardening, installing a bee garden, painting a sign for a peace garden, assisting at the Lake Phalen Waterfest, soliciting donations of bicycles for Cycles for Change, doing bike maintenance, picking up trash, leading a youth program on planting, painting a mural, helping with the Northeast Open Streets event and bagging food at Feed My Starving Children. On May 24, two YO crews also led volunteers in removing invasive garlic mustard at the Como Park Woodland Outdoor Classroom. Four AmeriCorps members, 15 YO crew members and 23 volunteers cleared 160 pounds of garlic mustard from the site, covering a little more than an acre.
