Land Steward – The Nature Conservancy in Nebraska
The Platte River Prairies Land Steward (Land Steward) assists the PRP Preserve Manager with all aspects of restoring and managing habitat, including prescribed fire, cattle grazing (through leases), seed harvest/planting, and a variety of invasive species suppression tactics, including herbicide application. That work supports local species and natural communities, but also provides opportunities for conservation professionals, landowners, and the general public to visit and learn about prairies and various conservation strategies.
The Land Steward operates equipment, including trucks, ATVs, UTVs, skid-steers, tractors, mowers, sprayers, and chainsaws. They also maintain and repair that equipment or coordinate with local vendors to do so. The Land Steward builds and repairs fences and other livestock infrastructure and maintains several buildings at the Platte River Prairie headquarters. In addition, they help supervise short-term staff and volunteers, coordinate with neighbors, lessees, and visiting researchers, and assist with field tours, workshops and other events.
This position will require work in variable weather conditions, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
