Meet Alexis Schmidt. Alexis served with Conservation Corps MN & IA in the Field Crew Program in Duluth, Minnesota on the Arrowhead and Moose Crews. Now, Alexis is down in the Texas heat working for a Parks system! Let’s follow that thread that lead Alexis from the northern U.S. to the southern U.S..
What kind of work did you do when you were in the Corps?
The same stuff (as now)!
Where are you now?
Technician for Park Land Management Travis County – Austin, Tx
What kind of work do you do?
Wildland fire, prescribed burns, restoration/conservation work, search and recovery.
Were there any particularly memorable or challenging experiences during your time in the Corps?
Being prepared for any situation that might pop up while spiking. Helped prepare me for doing the same work down in the Texas heat.
What was the most personally meaningful part of your experience with Conservation Corps?
Gave me the experience and knowledge I needed. Showed me how much I love doing this kind of work
How did the experience shape your career/life?
Gave me the confidence and room to grow I needed. Without joining the Conservative Corps I would have struggled even more getting into this realm of work. It really helped getting my foot in the door.
How did you use your education award?
Still deciding!
What advice would you offer to a current member serving in Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa?
Do the hard stuff, get dirty and push yourself out of your comfort zone.
What did you do immediately after your time in the Corps?
Moved to Texas and started working for Texas Parks and Wildlife as a maintenance ranger then moved into a Fuels Tech position for their fire program. Transferred over to Travis County this past winter into one of their park land management/wildfire tech spots and love it!
