Where Are They Now? Alumni Highlight: Shelby Roberts

Shelby Roberts is the Education and Outreach Specialist at Scott Soil and Water Conservation District. Shelby served as an Individual Placement member in 2017.


What kind of work did you do when you were in the Corps?

I worked as an environmental intern at the Scott SWCD monitoring noxious weeds throughout the county

Were there any particularly memorable or challenging experiences during your time in the Corps?

I logged all noxious weeds along all public roadways in the entirety of Scott County

What was the most personally meaningful part of your experience with Conservation Corps?

Learning the logistics of environmental programming and the impacts that small organizations can have on the local community.

How did the experience shape your career/life?

Because of my time in the Corps, I was later hired onto a permanent, full time position at the location I was placed at.

What advice would you offer to a current member serving in Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa?

If you’re on the fence for applying for a CCM position, do it! It’s unique, engaging, and a great way to start a career path.

What did you do immediately after your time in the Corps?

I finished college and spent a brief amount of time working in the environmental department at 3M.

Where are you now?

Working as an Education and Outreach Specialist at the Scott Soil and Water Conservation District.

What kind of work do you do?

I manage the education programming for the Scott County SWCD, including things like workshops, youth lessons, community events, news publications, and more! We promote environmental and conservation messaging for urban, rural, and lakeshore residents of all ages.
