Crews rebuild aging steps in Sac County park

Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa young adult crews recently completed work on rebuilding aging staircases at Hagge Park in Sac County in Iowa. During four weeks in September, three crews tore out 40-year-old steps and replaced them with 350 new box steps on four staircases. The new steps will greatly improve safety and aesthetics for visitors to this popular park, one of the largest and most-visited in Sac County. Chris Bass, director of the Sac County Conservation Board, praised the work of the Conservation Corps crews. “This was our first experience with a Conservation Corps crew and I am really pleased with the quality of work and attention to detail,” he said. “The project would have taken us a year to complete so it was a good investment.” Hegge Park covers 86 acres and includes the Conservation Board offices. Edged by the Raccoon River, the park is popular for camping, hiking, day use and naturalist programming.
