Crews deployed on disaster response
Two Corps crews based in Iowa are currently serving on disaster response deployments, returning later this week:
Coal City, Illinois tornado response
At the request of AmeriCorps St. Louis, a six-member crew from Ames deployed to Coal City, Illinois last week to assist with volunteer management and debris removal after an EF3 tornado damaged more than 800 homes in late June. Crew leader Emily Stursma is leading the team that includes Sara Anderson, Michelle Sheldon, Tonya Dunsmoor, Hayley Noneman and Andrew Thomas.
San Marcos, Texas flood response
The five-member Polk County crew led by crew leader Logan Mueller departed in mid-June for a four-week deployment in San Marcos, Texas, to assist residents affected by severe flooding that occurred in late May. The team – which includes Isaac Morgan, Jacob Lockhart, Will Boettcher and Win Cowger — joined 46 other AmeriCorps members that were activated from other AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams, to help with volunteer management, mucking and gutting of houses and debris removal. See Logan talk about the crew’s work on this Austin, Texas news broadcast.
