Working with the North Country Trail Association, the Grand Rapids trail crew helped complete more than a mile and a half of trail last month. From May 16-18, the association’s Arrowhead Chapter hosted a trail-building workshop and volunteer event that included instruction about how the trail is being built using a variety of hand tools and the opportunity to work on the trail within an already-cleared corridor. Corps crews from Grand Rapids and Tower, along with one corps member from Moose Lake, took part in the workshop as a training opportunity. The Grand Rapids crew then stayed on to assist with the trail work, along with 15 additional NCTA volunteers. They also hauled in bridge-building materials and laid gravel in a seasonally wet low spot. Matt Davis, project host from the NCTA said he always enjoys working with corps members on the trail. “It’s fun to meet them, learn why they got involved in conservation work and hear their personal stories,” he said. “My hope is that they will all feel a part of something really special (building a piece of the nation’s longest hiking trail) and it will be a jumpstart to a lifelong of engagement with local hiking trails wherever they end up.”
